Specialist Physicians

Specialist physicians diagnose and treats human diseases and disorders with specialist assessment, diagnostic and medical techniques. Common duties of specialist physicians are: 
 
  • examine patients to determine the nature and extent of injuries and diseases after a referral from General Medical Practitioners and other      medical specialists 
  • perform or order laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures and analyse test result to make a diagnosis  
  • prescribe and administer drugs, and remedial and therapeutic treatment  
  • record medical information and data 
  • report contagious and notifiable diseases to immigration and government health   
Specialist Physicians work in many parts of Australia. They work primarily in the Healthcare and Social Assistance industry.  The occupation experienced strong growth in the last five years and projected to continue in the next five years, from 7,200 in 2018 to 7,700 by 2023. 
 
Minimum requirements for Specialist Physicians include bachelor’s degree, relevant work experience and registration.
