Psychiatrists diagnose, assess, treat and prevent human mental, emotional and behavioural disorders. They work primarily in Healthcare and Social Assistance industry. Common duties include: 

  • evaluate patients' mental and physical condition and history to determine the nature and extent of mental, emotional and behavioural disorders
  • order laboratory tests, imaging, neuropsychological tests and other diagnostic procedures 
  • examine test results to determine the appropriate treatment program
  • prescribe medication, psychotherapy, and other physical treatments and rehabilitation programs 

Minimum requirements for psychiatrist include bachelor’s degree, relevant work experience, and registration.
