Optometrist and Orthoptist

Optometrists and Orthoptists administer eye examinations; prescribe lenses and optical aids and therapy; and manage eye movement disorders. Common duties include:
 
  • examine patients' eyes and set tests to determine the nature and extent of vision problems and abnormalities
  • use special eye test equipment to evaluate overall ocular health and visual function: measure visual acuity and refractive error, and testing the function of visual pathways and fields, eye movements, freedom of vision and intraocular pressure 
  • identify eye movement disorders and defects of binocular function
  • prescribe lenses, contact lenses and low vision aids, and checking suitability and comfort
  • recommends eye exercises to coordinate visual movement and focus 
  • advise patients in the use of corrective techniques and eye exercises
  • provide instructions on visual health matters like contact lens care, vision care for the elderly and occupational and industrial eye safety
  • conduct rehabilitation programs for the visually impaired
