SURGEONS

Surgeons perform surgery to correct deformities, treat and prevent repair injuries and diseases, and enhance human appearance and functioning.  

Surgeons work in many parts of Australia. They work primarily in Healthcare and Social Assistance industry. Common duties of surgeons are:  
  • examine patients to determine the necessity of operations, explain the risks to patients, and choose the best operational procedures
  • evaluate patients' general physical condition, reactions to medications and medical histories 
  • perform surgical operations 
  • ensure instruments, equipment, and surgical set-up follow the antiseptic and aseptic protocol  
  • prescribe post-operative care, and monitor patients' progress 
  • maintain records of operations performed 
The occupation experienced a steady growth in the last five years and expected to continue in the next five years, from 5,900 in 2018 to 6,000 by 2023.  

Minimum requirements for Surgeons include bachelor’s degree, relevant work experience, and registration.
