General Surgeons are medical doctors with additional years of specialist study and training, experience, and authority to handle surgical procedures to repair injuries, correct deformities, prevent and treat diseases, or enhance body functions and physical appearance.  Also known as Senior Staff Specialists or Senior Medical Officers (Surgeons), they are usually faced with the challenging medical cases which are most often in life-saving situations.

They consult and work closely with Anaesthetists on general surgeries and provide instructions to other health care professionals (i.e. nurse) for the preparation of patients and instruments and/or equipment needed for the surgery.  They maintain records of surgical procedures done, prescribe post-operative care, and monitor patient’s health progress.   

General Surgeon is the highest paid occupation in Australia, with an average of $160,000 even for those in the first 5 years of their practice.  Salaries vary by location; Adelaide with a median pay total approximately at $250,000 (above the national average) and Perth with a median pay total approximately at $148,000 (below the national average).  While the income potential is great, becoming a general surgeon is not an easy medical specialty considering the length and rigorous study requirements which include a 4-year undergraduate degree, a medical graduate degree, additional years in training, including at least 5 years of residency in general surgery.  Further studies and training into more specialised fields include Cardiology, Neurology, Orthopaedic, Otorhinolaryngology, Paediatric, Plastic and Reconstructive, Urology, and Vascular Surgery.

Government statistics are showing over 7,000 General Surgeons are in active practice nationwide and the majority are in the States of Victoria, New South Wales, Western, and South Australia.  They work in both private and public hospitals, and most often, with concurrent private practice in a local private facility.  It is projected that more than a thousand additional General Surgeons will be needed in the next 5 years to adequately service the requirements of a continuously growing, albeit aging population.  

Essentials: 

• Pre-Medicine Bachelor’s Degree and completed Post-Graduate Doctor of Medicine
• Current Australian Registration as a General Surgeon
• Minimum of 2 years as Senior Staff Specialist or Senior Medical Officer within the last 5 years 
   

Desirable:

• Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or its equivalent
