Physiotherapists or Physical Therapists (PTs) are considered highly qualified health professionals who are responsible for assessing, diagnosing, treating human body pain and disorders associated with poor health conditions and restricted movements. They play an important part in the promotion of good health, education of both patients and carers, prevention of injuries, rehabilitation, preservation of functional mobility, acute care, and management of chronic diseases.
Physiotherapists study each patient’s case, prepare treatment plan and execute appropriate therapies i.e. exercise programs to treat bodily symptoms, correct problems with coordination, posture, and strength, record prognosis and monitor progress in individual’s chart, with the goal of facilitating healing and restoring the patient’s quality of life. They work to address a broad range of physiological needs in areas such as cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, neurological, orthopaedics, paediatrics, sports physiotherapy, ergonomics, among others. Majority of their patients are referred by General Practitioners, hospital ward doctors or medical consultants, and by other health professionals.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy is required prior to practice licensure in Australia. For those trained and experienced as a Physiotherapist in other countries, an initial Australian accreditation process is needed before gaining eligible to apply for the national registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia (PBA). The Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC) is the assessment and accreditation authority responsible for evaluating overseas qualifications of international Physiotherapists. Once issued with an APC Interim Certificate, an overseas PT may commence with the registration exams with the PBA. Pending full registration, the international PT may legally practice under close supervision of a fully registered local PT.
