Occupational Therapist Australia - Locations include: Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast

Occupational Therapists’ (OTs) primary job functions are to assess people’s limitations resulting from injuries, illnesses, and/or disabilities, and to plan out and provide appropriate therapeutic means and/or equipment to enable them to carry out their daily activities and work as normal as possible. They assist individual patients at all ages; monitoring their recovery and progress in relation to their abilities to perform basic day-to-day tasks, both at home and their work environment, with the end goal of bringing them to functional independence – physically, sensory, mentally, and ultimately, improving the patient’s self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.

Occupational Therapists work in Health Care and Social Assistance, Public Administration and Safety, and Education and Training settings. More specifically, they can be found working with patients with mental health needs, children with disabilities, with elders in aged care and rehabilitation centres, as well as in acute care, among other health care facility. Oftentimes, Occupational Therapists work in collaboration with Physiotherapists and Chiropractors, with the two latter occupations focusing more on manual therapy and acupuncture, respectively.

To qualify as an Occupational Therapist, you must complete an undergraduate or masters entry-level course in Occupational Therapy, and then apply for board registration to legally practice in the country. Like other allied health occupations, an overseas-trained Occupational Therapist planning to migrate in Australia must undergo an assessment under its relevant occupational board council, and once onshore with an accredited overseas training, the initial employment shall be under ‘’supervised practice hours’’ where performance will be monitored and evaluated according to national standards within the Australian work context. Specifically, for Occupational Therapists, the assessing and national registration body is the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia, supported by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) that covers all other allied health national boards.

Although for some reasons this occupation is still female dominated, the job prospects in general are very high, with around 9,000 expected new job requirements in the next 5 years.
