General Medical Practitioners, also known as General Practitioners (GPs) or Physicians/Doctors, are trained and authorised to diagnose and treat patients with physical and/or mental disorders, illnesses, and injuries. They conduct physical examinations, order laboratory tests and other diagnostic procedures as needed, interpret findings, prescribed medicines and recommend treatment plans. They also educate patients and carers on preventative health care and refer patients to specialist Medical Practitioners or other health care and support workers whenever specific conditions require further medical evaluation and treatment.
To become a General Practitioner in Australia, a Bachelor’s Degree or higher is required, as well as national licensing. Prior to full registration with AHPRA as a Physician/Doctor, General Practitioners may need to go through clinical training as a Resident Medical Officer under the supervision of either a Medical Specialist or a Senior General Practitioner. Their areas of specialisations may include Intensive Care Anaesthetist, Obstetric Anaesthetist, Pain Management Specialist. International Medical Graduates with limited Australian registration are usually working under supervision in the areas of need (rural or remote location) where there is a shortage of General Practitioners.
