A Dentist’s principal accountabilities include the promotion and consultations on oral health, removal of tooth decay, filling of cavities, repairing fractured teeth, interpreting dental x-rays, diagnosing oral diseases, treating problems with teeth, gums, and related parts of the mouth, ensuring the safe administration of anaesthetics, and restoring normal oral functions using appropriate treatment options which may include dental surgery.  Sometimes also called as a Dental Specialist, Dental Practitioner, or Dental Surgeon, a Dentist is primarily responsible for the preservation of good oral health and treatment of teeth and related oral problems.  

 

In a large and busy dental practice offering a broad range of dental services, Dentists usually work closely with a team of Dental Hygienists, Dental Technicians, and Dental Therapists who assist in preventative and restorative dental care, including periodontal treatments, fluoride applications, and oral health care promotion.

 

To become a Dentist in Australia, one must complete a Bachelor’s Degree, pass the Dental Admissions Test (DAT), and complete a further 4-year study to obtain a Doctorate Degree in Dental Surgery or in Dental Medicine.  State Board of Dentistry Licensure is also required to legally practice in specific locations.  If you are an international Dentist wanting to migrate into the country, you would need to go through the evaluation of the Australian Dental Council (ADC) as an initial step to validating your Dentistry Degree from overseas, and only after which, you can be eligible to sit in the written and practical examinations for local registration.

Essentials: 

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Surgery or its equivalent
2. Current, unrestricted AHPRA registration as a Dentist

1. Experience using modern equipment: digital practice software, digital x-rays, rotary endo, intra-oral cameras
2. Experience in Orthodontic and/or children/young patients
