Registered Nurse (Aged Care) Jobs Australia - Locations include: Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast
Registered Nurse is a licensed occupation that is focused on promoting wellness and health and providing nursing care to patients. They work in a broad range of settings such as aged care, rehabilitation, mental health, acute care, chronic care. Specifically, in residential aged care facilities, Registered Nurses are expected to evaluate resident cases and make clinical decisions, assess, review, and update care plans, and provide residents with appropriate clinical care, as well as support and educate care team members, and provide support to fulfill Aged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI) requirements.
To become a Registered Nurse in Australia, you must complete a 3-year Bachelor of Nursing course or its equivalent. Core subjects include Physiology, Anatomy, Microbiology, Nutrition, Psychology, and Chemistry. Licensing with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) is also required. For overseas trained and registered nurses, however, you may initially apply to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for assessment and accreditation. Depending on individual background and experience, AHPRA may recommend qualified overseas nurses to undergo the Initial Registration Overseas Nurses (IRON) or Bridging program prior to full registration in Australia. The said IRON program is a combined classroom learning and works placement within the local industry to assimilate Australian nursing laws, standards and practices and thus facilitates the transition from the overseas nursing background.
The average salary of Registered Nurses nationwide is at $31.19/hour or $64,000 per annum. Majority of them are female, work full-time for 38 hours weekly, and have less than 4 years of work experience. Like in most other occupations, earnings tend to increase as their actual experience grow.
With an aging population, Registered Nurses in Australia will continue to be one of the occupations in high demand, especially in the growing aged care industry. Despite the increasing numbers of new local graduates of nursing and the influx of international students and overseas nurses going through the bridging program and getting locally registered to practice, the country is still experiencing skills shortage in this line of work. The industry is projecting around 160,000 new job opportunities for Registered Nurses over the next 5 years.
